In just two years, WCPS had already spent around $600,000 of the $1.5 million awarded, with a focus on international students. However, the funding cut threatens to halt these initiatives and potentially impact staffing. Ben Kirtley, WCPS's districtwide director, highlights the uncertainty surrounding the continuation of programs, such as anti-vaping initiatives and staff positions, which are crucial for the schools' success.
Despite the setback, the schools have already seen positive outcomes. Chronic absenteeism at Jennings Creek Elementary has decreased from 14.8% to 9.1% this month, and the school's kindergarten readiness score improved by 10 points last year. The grant's impact is evident in increased family involvement, with a diverse range of ethnicities participating in events. Moss Middle School has also witnessed a surge in family attendance and improved attendance and behavior scores.
The Prichard Committee's letter to the Daily News reveals that the program no longer aligns with the Trump administration's priorities, leaving the future of these initiatives uncertain. The schools must now find alternative funding sources to sustain their efforts, which could be challenging given the tight budget constraints of WCPS and the lack of a determined school funding plan by the Kentucky General Assembly.
