"The World Championship is within reach," he shared at Buriram, "and we're more confident than ever. The bike's handling has improved, and I'm loving it. We've made significant progress, but we're not there yet. We need to fine-tune the rear grip and maximize the potential of the new tyres. Fix those, and we're in the game. The goal is to consistently finish in the top 6 or 7, capitalize on mistakes, and keep doing what we do best."
The Honda Decision: A Turning Point
Luca reflects on those pivotal days, "It was an opportunity for growth, to become a stronger rider and a better person. I chose Honda because I want to win the World Championship, and doing so with a legendary manufacturer like Honda would be extraordinary. I grew up watching Valentino on Honda, first in 500cc and then MotoGP. It was a dream. Being part of a factory team gives you an extra edge. Representing a manufacturer officially is every rider's dream, and doing it for Honda, with its rich MotoGP history, is a source of pride."
Growth and Ducati Experience
When asked about his growth, Luca credits Ducati, "In recent years, Ducati has been the pinnacle of performance, offering unparalleled confidence. Developing a bike, refining it, and striving to make it the best in every technical aspect is a stimulating challenge. I feel I've improved significantly in this regard. The increased responsibility has also contributed to my growth. Racing in Vale's team was unique; it was neither better nor worse, just different. When Honda presented the opportunity, I knew I had to take it."
The First to Know: Vale
"I told Vale first," Luca reveals. "We had several conversations about it, and then I signed."
Honda's Challenges: A New Beginning
Did he feel intimidated joining Honda? "Not at all. I quickly realized the bike had excellent potential and handled well, but it lagged in many areas, not just technically, but also organizationally, in work methods, and team structure. I offered feedback on and off the track to help improve. Today, much has changed; the bike is a different beast."
Beyond the Track: Luca's Personal Journey
His mother, Stefania, once suggested he could have been a doctor. "She always encouraged me to study and achieve greatness. She saw something special in me. But motorbikes are my true passion. I still nurture my curiosity and strive to be prepared, bringing something extra to the table. It's a valuable asset if used wisely."
The Academy guys nicknamed him 'the Russian' due to his emotional reserve. "I'm not one to show my emotions. When I'm angry, it's noticeable: my eyes turn icy. But I just try to be myself. You can't please everyone."
Dealing with Criticism and Social Media
"I'm not very active on social media, and I try to avoid it. I only get upset when lies are spread, which is common. Everyone has their role."
The Suzuka Accident: A Turning Point
Recalling the serious accident at Suzuka, Luca shares, "At the time, I didn't realize the severity. I never thought it could end my career or result in losing a limb or even death. My focus was on working hard to recover as quickly and fully as possible. When you suffer a serious injury, you never fully recover, but getting back to 98% or 99% is a victory. That moment gave me a clear goal. I was sad to miss riding and had to watch races on TV. In hindsight, you think about what you could have done differently, but that's life."
Luca Marini: The Man Beyond Motorcycles
"I've evolved a lot in recent years. I consider myself a simple guy who loves his family and his passion. I don't need much to be happy; what I have is enough."
If Not a Rider?
"I would have loved to be an athlete in any sport. I cherish the values of sports, both individual and team-based. It offers an incredible life, despite the sacrifices. I find it challenging to experience strong emotions in daily life. Motorcycles were one of the few things that truly made me smile as a kid. That's why I persevered."
The Ducati Burden: A Learning Experience
"Not winning with Ducati isn't a burden. It's part of the journey. I had a couple of chances, but I wasn't good enough to win. Now, I'm focused on the present and determined to achieve victory with Honda as soon as possible."
The Human Connection: Marini and Japan
"There's a strong human connection. We're culturally different, but I deeply respect their work ethic and lifestyle. They have much to teach us in the West. I believe the Italian-Japanese blend works beautifully."
The MotoGP Market: Speculations and Reality
When asked about his future, Luca reveals, "Honestly, I haven't seen any concrete offers. We're in talks with Honda about renewing because I believe in this project. The paddock is a tight-knit community; everyone talks to everyone. The only way forward is to focus on the track and strive to win every weekend, regardless of the contract."

On Toprak's arrival in MotoGP, Luca says, "He made the right choice. In Superbike, he showcased incredible strength, winning in spectacular fashion. This year will be a transition; MotoGP is vastly different. With next year's tyre change, he could become a force to be reckoned with and have a blast."

"I don't dwell much on my legacy. I just want to have fun, feel good, and stay healthy."
